Company Overview
OUR MISSION
Military Sealift Command (MSC) is the ocean transportation provider for the Department of Defense with the responsibility of providing strategic sealift and ocean transportation for all military forces overseas.

WHO IS MSC
Our workforce is made up of civilian mariners (CIVMARS), a unique group of skilled government employees who serve onboard our ships in civil service positions. As a CIVMAR, you will play a critical role in supporting our nation’s defense. MSC operates a growing fleet of over 40 ships, to include:
  • Underway Replenishment Oilers provide fuel to Navy ships at sea and jet fuel for aircraft assigned to aircraft carriers.
  • Combat Stores provide underway replenishment of all types of supplies, ranging from repair parts to fresh food and clothing.
  • Ocean Going Tugs provide the Navy with towing service, and when augmented by Navy divers, assist in the recovery of downed ships and aircraft.
  • Ammunition Ships provide Navy ships with all modes of ammunition.
  • Hospital Ships provide emergency, on-site care for U.S. combat forces and can be mobilized for humanitarian support around the globe. The ship’s crew is made up of a combination of CIVMARS and Military medical staff.
  • T-AKE Ships are MSC’s new Combat Logistics ships that deliver supplies to Navy ships. These multi-platform ships transfer cargo –ammunition, food, limited quantities of fuel, repair parts, ship store items and expendable supplies – at sea to station ships and other naval warfare forces.
LIFE AT SEA
Living conditions on MSC ships are kept above current maritime standards. While onboard one of our ships, you will enjoy private or semi-private staterooms and three meals a day prepared by our staff of culinary experts. A majority of our ships also offer a lounge, library and weight room to use during off hours.

A shipboard assignment is a minimum of four months. Upon completion of each assignment, CIVMARS can elect to remain onboard, rotate to a different ship, attend a training program or go on earned leave. Once employed with MSC, you will be paid your base salary and any earned overtime. Overtime is paid for work performed in excess of 8 hours per day or for work performed on weekends and holidays. All CIVMARS earn an average of two to three weeks’ vacation time after serving their four-month tour.

TRAINING & PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
MSC provides mandatory training to newly hired mariners at our Firefighting schools in Freehold, NJ and San Diego, CA. Additional paid training and promotional opportunities are based on positions, ship requirements, self-initiative and the ability to advance to the next higher rated position through our Merit Promotion Process.

MSC employs a variety of positions onboard our civil service manned ships. All personnel serving onboard an MSC ship must have, at a minimum, a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Document with entry-level endorsements. Specific ratings may also require additional endorsements, licenses or prior experience in order to qualify. Additional requirements for individual position vacancies are listed on the Now Hiring page.
