Welder III
Purpose:
  • Valkyrie Enterprises has an immediate need for a Welder III, who will play a key role in welding on Naval Ships and Installations, working across Hampton Roads, VA in various shipyards.
Job Description:
  • Fabricate, and/ or modify metal components to assemble structural forms such as foundations, bulkheads, and frames within the hull of ship.
  • Fabricate, modify, or remove and blank piping sections in hydraulic, pneumatic, etc. systems in accordance with applicable technical work documents.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and rough sketches. Use drawings and specifications to plan (services, consumables, man hours required, etc.), execute welding operations in a timely manner.
  • Able to communicate possible delays and assist in planning around them.
  • Ensure that work is in accordance with relevant drawing revisions and other technical work documents.
  • Require minimal to no supervision selection of welding filler material, joint designs, and proper heat ranges as directed by the applicable procedures.
  • Locate and mark reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
  • Fabricate templates, jigs, targets, and other fixtures needed for bending, shaping, and bracing metal or piping assemblies.
  • Set-up and use of portable burning/heating torches and plasma cutters.
  • Work well with others in a team environment.
  • Mentor junior welders in drawing interpretation, joint design requirements, specific welding technique (mirror welding) and processes.
  • Oversee the progression of junior welder workmanship inspectors.
  • Willing to learn documentation of fit-up, welds and workmanship inspections.
  • Comply with all OSHA, shipyard safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform Fire watch duties.
Qualifications:
  • Must have a Highschool diploma or equivalent and at least 10 years of experience in the maritime industry. OR Trade School (or Military equivalent) with at least 7 years of experience.
  • Must be able to understand and interpret welding symbols IAW MIL-STD 22D and AWS A2.4.
  • Must be proficient in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW restricted.
  • Must have experience in welding Carbon steel, Stainless Steel, Copper- Nickel, Nickel- Copper, and Aluminum thicknesses less than 1/16" (SCH 10 Pipe) and greater.
  • Must be familiar with Hydraulic, CHT, EAB, piping cleanliness requirements.
  • Must be able to set-up, adjust, and operate various welding equipment and any hand tools used in trade.
  • Must pass all applicable process weld qualifications (2G, 3G, & 4G, 6G, 5F, 4F)
  • Must meet NAVSEA 248 requirements by passing Fitter and Welder Workmanship examinations.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Able to obtain a passport
  • Previous experience welding PQR's a plus
  • Previous brazing experience a plus
  • Previous FCAW experience a plus
Security Requirements:
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance to access private and public shipyards and Naval Installations.
  • Prefer a valid US. Drivers License.
Travel Requirements:
  • Up to 50% travel nationwide to include international travel as needed
  • May be required to travel to jobsites away from Shipyard and utilize company vehicle.
  • May be required to work more than the standard work week, including weekends.
  • If position requires travel by domestic flight or access to secure federal facilities/military bases, candidate must be able to obtain (by start of position) and maintain appropriate identification credentials, such as REAL ID. Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise above 85Db due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.

Pay Range: $58,000 - $72,800 per year
