Overview

Sierra Lobo, offers customers a full range of professional and technical capabilities, including Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies. We also develop products and processes related to Cryogenic Fluid and Thermal Management Systems, Densified Propellant Management Systems, and Prototype Extreme Pressure and Temperature Systems. Our customers include the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

This position will be located at NASA's Langley Research Center.

Responsibilities

The Energy Management Engineer will be challenged by work that is essential to NASA's goal of achieving yearly reductions in energy use and the related cost savings, collaborating in a Team Environment under the guidance of NASA Langley's Energy Manager. Activities shall include, but not be limited to, the following:

    Participating in data calls, meetings, and conference calls at NASA Langley and NASA Headquarters, including oral and written communication (i.e. presentations, white papers, etc.)
  • Performing energy and economic analysis of energy efficiency measures using energy modeling software, spreadsheets and other tools, including measuring and verifying Energy Conservation Measure performance, and HVAC system tuning and optimization. Making recommendations of appropriate energy saving measures including lighting, motors, drives, HVAC systems, and industrial process improvements to the NASA Energy Manager.
  • Conducting energy audits (ASHRAE Level 1 & 2) to identify energy reduction opportunities in lighting, HVAC, building envelope, water, renewables, controls, and other energy and water using systems.
  • Performing reviews for design projects, including drawings, specifications, scopes of work, cost estimates, and requests for proposals (RFP's), to include planning activities associated with project development in order to verify compliance to NASA standards.
  • Preparing comprehensive reports with detailed analytical findings.
  • Performing utility rate and monthly billing analysis. Provide analysis of facility's historical energy and water use.
  • Conducting building retro-commissioning activities including functional performance testing and monitoring of equipment.
Qualifications

US citizenship is required. BS degree in Mechanical or Electrical engineering and three (3) to five (5) years related engineering experience, or MS degree and two (2) to three (3) years of related engineering experience, or Ph.D.

  • Ability to be an enthusiastic and participatory Energy Team Member who is able to convey thoughts and ideas both orally and in written form.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data analysis, with energy modeling/simulation of complex building systems (i.e. TRANE TRACE 700, OSI PI or similar programs) preferred.
  • Demonstrated consumer side energy analysis experience (energy efficiency, renewable technology, HVAC analysis, building load analysis, etc.).
  • Understanding of basic concepts required for analyzing building envelope, mechanical systems, electrical systems, lighting systems, etc.
  • Certification, or interest in certification, in any of the following disciplines: Certified Energy Manager, Engineer in Training, or Professional Engineer license.
Essential Functions
Work Environment
Office environment (85%). Test/Industrial Environment - May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals and industrial facilities. Travel between facilities and test sites is required. Travel between various facilities/test operations is required and may bring exposure to loud noise and potentially hazardous equipment operation (<10%)
Equipment and Machine:
Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, copier, etc.) (50%) Safety and Personal Protective Equipment (20%)
Physical Requirements:
The ability to enter into confined spaces, crawl into or onto various assemblies while maintaining a clear vision of safety is required. Potential exposure to high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, propellants and the like. Appropriate PPE and training will be provided for all conditions. Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist and sit for extended periods as well as climb, crawl, and lift up to 35 lbs.

Other Essential Functions:
U.S. Citizenship required. A valid driver's license is required. Must be able to work in a team atmosphere. Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety/risk hazard to the employee or others. Must be able to balance scope, schedule and budget to insure project success. The work environment requires the ability to cooperate and work with individuals at all levels of the company and the client. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance as required.
