Purpose/Summary:

Responsible for the collection, review, and analysis of USMMI fleet submissions in the Nautical Systems platform of all safety related Incident reports; to include injury reports, Near Miss report, Safety Observations, equipment damage, and other data collection as directed.

Responsible on monthly basis to conduct analysis of ship submitted safety metrics, to conduct trending analysis.

Responsible for preparation / formatting of data and trending analysis for inclusion into USMMI monthly Safety Report.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Measure and identify trends in safety and environmental performance at all levels by maintaining statistical records of near misses, non-conformances, and incidents.

  • In coordination with Program Managers, responsible for office staff safety induction and familiarization program

  • Track USMM LLC commitment to HSSE excellence including colleague submission of ideas and suggestions to enhance HSSE standards.

  • Coordinate with Director MMS and Program Managers to develop health and shipboard safety and awareness campaigns

  • Collate all risk assessments for best practice sharing, to improve the company safety culture.

  • Analyze leading and lagging indicators of safety performance, both across the fleet and on an individual vessel basis, to identify areas where the safety culture can be improved

  • Monitor USMMI fleet environmental performance and energy efficiency in coordination with port engineers

  • Analyze vessel regulatory inspection results and makes comparisons within the fleet, to improve vessel standards

  • Analysis of audit results is performed at least annually and this drives continual improvement of the SMS.

    1. Identifying trends and areas for improvement.
    2. Identifying required improvements of the SMS.
    3. Confirming compliance with new legislation requirements.
    4. Measuring compliance with the SMS.

  • Conduct incident investigations for serious safety incidents onboard. There may be a requirement to attend the ship to conduct the investigation in cases of serious incidents.

  • Conduct periodic reviews of Certificate Manager to ensure the fleet's certificates are up to date. Alert the program and port engineers when ship's certs are approaching expiry window.

  • Organize / manage drafting of quarterly Safety Newsletters and distribute to the fleet:

To include format of the newsletter, assign sections to USMMI shoreside staff (operations, risk management, payroll), draft safety content, include safety stats, etc.

Position Specifications:

Education and experience:

A combination of formal education and marine industry experience that provides a thorough basis for safety analysis.

Technical Skills and Competencies Required

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Ability to conduct incident investigations for serious safety incidents onboard. There may be a requirement to attend the ship to conduct the investigation in cases of serious incidents.
  • Technical proficiency in the management and operation of ABS Nautical Systems Enterprise (NSE).
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen capable to obtain a Secret Security clearance.
  • Must be in sufficient physical condition to complete international travel to austere locations when required and work in hot temperatures on board large vessels without elevators.
  • Excellent clerical and organizational skills
  • Able to work without supervision and deal with multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Computer literate with experience in word processing and database programs

General office setting, typically the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work, usually at a computer terminal - with short breaks or lunch period. However, there may be some bending/stooping, reaching above shoulder level, walking; standing; carrying of light items such as papers, books or packages of up to 50 pounds. Should be able to hear & speak clearly using phone / headset to communicate with customers; be able to navigate, view & enter information on the computer.

Operations Employees typically employee must be able to Sit, Stand, Walk Bend, Push/Pull, Kneel, Squat, Reaching and Twisting. Also, need the ability to consistently be able to lift 10lb - 100lb utilizing Folding Hand Truck & Dolly, Rolling Utility Carts or Single Hand Trucks (70 - 100%) of time.
