Naval Architect

Position Summary:

As a Naval Architect you will provide technical guidance, supervise all resources, and provide support for the projects assigned. You will review maintenance availability planning products for surface ships to ensure safe repair procedures are planned and ship's stability is maintained throughout the availability, up to delivery.

This position will be part-time with a hybrid of in-office and work from home in the Norfolk area.

Contract Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with a current secret clearance.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Generate production information for ship structure, hull machinery/equipment installation, hull fitting installation/fabrication, accommodation furnishing, etc.
  • Performing naval architecture calculations, e.g., stability/hydrostatic, weight distribution, etc.
  • Develop a Turnover Book to be used during the maintenance availability
  • Perform ship inspection and/or checks as required
  • Assisting to resolve technical compliance issues

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:
  • Must have a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering degree in Naval Architecture or Structural Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) school with emphasis in Structural Engineering or Naval Architecture
  • Minimum of ten (10) years' prior experience working with US Naval vessels
  • Detailed experience with regard to ship's stability and docking
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with:
    • NAVSEA S9086-C6-STM-010 - Weights and Stability
    • NAVSEA Technical Publication, Design Practices and Criteria for U.S. Navy Surface Ship Stability and Reserve Buoyancy T9070-AF-DPC-010/079-1
  • A fundamental understanding of Naval Architecture with practical experience in Stability and Weights (essential)
  • A thorough knowledge of ship maintenance and the impacts to weight and stability
  • A thorough knowledge of vessel structural design
  • Familiarity with classification, marine regulatory codes and international standards applicable to shipbuilding repairs/conversions

Preferred Experience:
  • 3-5 years as a Certified Docking Observer (NAVSEA Dry Dock Safety Certification Program)

Physical Demands and Expectations:
  • Regular physical activity to include walking, climbing stairs, and standing; frequent periods of prolonged sitting may be required.
  • Maneuvering around tight spaces in a shipboard environment.
  • Ability to speak, read, hear, and write, with or without assistance.
  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax and other office equipment.
